Dear friend,
Hong Kong Shrimp Toast (蝦多士) is a culinary gem that encapsulates the essence of comfort food and the quaintness of dim sum. It’s an any day snack, or make it a meal, that is delightful to the palate and playful to the eyes. The heart of this dish lies in its umami-rich shrimp, meticulously marinated to achieve a juicy and crisp texture that perfectly complements the buttery, cronchy-ness of milk bread toast. When these elements come together, they create a snack that will appeal to all ages!
Storytime! I make a lot of shrimp dumplings and dim sum recipes at home because Mom loves eating them, and even in my thirties, I can’t help but please my Cantonese mother!
Back to the recipe. What makes Hong Kong Shrimp Toast a standout dish is its versatility. While the traditional recipe is a crowd-pleaser, it also allows for creative variations that cater to different dietary preferences. Substituting shrimp with imitation crab meat adds a different yet equally compelling flavor profile. Meanwhile, vegetarians and vegans can enjoy this dish by replacing shrimp with finely chopped tofu, seitan, or mushrooms. A paste made with potatoes or sweet potatoes would do too!
The shrimp toast is great on its own, but try either of the dipping sauce I recommended!
